Directing trackside operations for Finlay
Motorsports are brothers Steve and Rick Cameron. Born in New
Zealand and legends in open-wheel racing, the duo have quickly risen to the challenge
of endurance sports car racing with a 6th-place finish in the 2005 Rolex Series Championship,
Finlay Motorsportsí first year in the intensely competitive Daytona Prototype category.
Steve Cameron is both Finlay Motorsports Team Manager and driver coach, while Rick
Cameron holds the title of Technical Director.
Operating out of the new, state-of-the-art Finlay Motorsports headquarters complex
in Mooresville, North Carolina, the duo are veterans of many racing series, including
Formula Ford, Star Mazda, Sports Racer, ACRL (American City Racing League), Indy
Lights, Atlantics and Vintage.
Seasoned in all aspects of auto racing, Steve Cameronís driving career began in 1979,
as the New Zealand Formula Vee Champion, and culminated in 1992 and 1993 with back-to-back
Daytona 24 wins. His skill in the driverís seat has also been harnessed as a test-driver
for Atlantic, Formula 1, GTO, GTP and Vintage racecars.
Distilling his knowledge to young up-and-coming drivers, he has coached some of racingís
best talent, including 2004 Indy 500 winner Buddy Rice, 2002 Indy 500 Rookie of the
Year Alex Barron, Champ Car drivers Memo Gidley, Patrick Carpentier and Michael Valiante,
as well as 20 year-old driving phenom Michael McDowell, winner of the 2004 Star Mazda
Series.
Rick Cameronís technical expertise is put to the test before, during and after every
race, ensuring that the team vehicles are fit to win, regardless of conditions. His
skill as engineer and technical director led him to be named crew chief of the year
twice, in 1996 and 1997 (Toyota Atlantic). His premier knowledge has resulted in
both race wins and championships in a variety of racing series, from karts to Indy
Lights, Toyota Atlantic and Star Mazda.
Rick Cameronís son, Dane Cameron, appears to be following in the family footsteps;
with sponsorship from the Drive4USA program, the Dane Cameron, the 16 year-old dominated
the 2005 SCCA Formula Russell Championship Presented by Yokohama, winning the championship
with six victories, seven pole positions and 10 podium finishes. |
