Finlay participated in an advance course at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving where he met the young energetic driving talent Michael McDowell. The duo hit it off and Finlay decided to organize the racing team that has evolved into Finlay Motorsports.
In 2004, he co-drove with Michael McDowell in a limited schedule of five Grand Am Cup races, scoring his first career top-10 finish at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Finlay's first full year of professional-level competition came in 2005, which began with a podium finish in the Grand Am Cup event at the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona. Finlay and McDowell finished the season with two top-five finishes, and with that experience to draw on, Finlay made his debut as a Daytona Prototype driver when the team fielded a second car in the season finale at Mexico City.
